This little guy may have started with no name, but he sure had a guardian angel! Picked up out of the center of a busy road during morning rush hour on March 9th, things did not look so good at first. Called to assist the volunteer who moved him off the road, Cincinnati Cats President John Korra responded and gently placed  him in a carrier and rushed him to Kings Veterinary Hospital. We were not sure if he would make it. He went a couple of days without eating, but with some gentle coaxing Kelly got him started .

Speranza, which is Italian for 'hope', is the name we are giving this sweetie. His nick name is Oz. The most serious injury he is suffering from is a fractured pelvis. Bed rest, some pain meds and a whole lot of TLC is what the doctors are prescribing for Speranza. He has a long road ahead, but we are hopeful for his recovery.

Support for Speranza
You can help support Speranza's recovery by donating to Cincinnati Cats. His emergency and medical costs are expected to be about $800 but there will also be continuing costs of care for some time. PDF donation form can be opened HERE. Use the Donate button on the left to donate online. Donations are tax deductible as permitted. Please help us cover the medical costs for this beautiful boy and the costs we incur helping the many other cats in greater Cincinnati.

Adoption of Speranza
After recovery, it is hopeful that Speranza will find a loving home with someone who is able to care for a cat that may have some limitations. Applications for adoption are available at the Cincinnati Cats adoption site.
This is where the cat was found, right in the middle of the road.

Speranza continues to do well. He is eating and scooting around a little. Thank you everyone at Kings!
  March 18, 2010

Speranza must be feeling a bit feisty today. Got a good hiss and a couple of swats for wanting to pet him this morning. Definitely has more energy. He did calm down and enjoyed a neck rub. Has been eating well and moving around a bit more. Hoping Speranza will leave the hospital this weekend and continue his recovery at one of our sanctuary/foster homes.

The past few days have been uncomfortable for speranza as he appears to be experiencing a bit more pain. This has made it more difficult to handle him and we have decided to keep him in hospital for a while longer to assure that his needs for care can be met by the well trained and equiped staff at Kings.

Speranza was released from hospital on Friday and is comfortable at his foster home.

April 5, 2010 - Speranza continues to make good progress physically. We see him walking more often and more steadily on the recordings. He is playing with toys at night as well and rolling onto his back occasionally. Socially, he has further to go. He is slow to accept our presence and will not stand at all yet when we are around. Speranza is getting better at allowing us to pet him with fewer hisses and only rarely a swat now and then, but he is obviously not comfortable with it as of yet even though he seems to enjoy once he starts to relax. We are working to spend as much time as possible in the room to help him become comfortable around people.

Speranza continues to make great progress in his recovery. He has been walking with greater ease and even climbing the side of the cage a little. Most of the time Speranza enjoys being petted and brushed, though he does not like hands being too close so gloves are still required. We continue to work on his socail skills and believe that he will see that us humans are not so bad.

June 2010

Speranza has made fantastic progress socially. He craves attention from the other cats and looks to his humans for frequent petting and play time. Speranza actually sleeps in bed up against his people now!  He is still showing limitations physically. While he seems to be comfortable walking and climbing steps, he rarely leaps or jumps and when he does it is a very short distance. Speranza is very happy.
